Monday - we wrote a full paragraph (120-150) words on the factors that contributed to Jackie Robinson's success in changing society. Introduction - ACE - ACE - Conclusion. We did this on Google Classroom. Below are those pages which were our notes. TAKE HOME: Module 3 pages 26, 27, 28 There should be at least 3 observations/hear on page 26 2 questions on the top of page 27 Outline of the summary on the bottom of page 27 4 people mentioned under personal qualities with " "s PG 28 NOTES: I WON'T ALWAYS PUT SUGGESTIONS BELOW BUT I WANTED YOU TO HAVE AN IDEA OF WHAT I EXPECT AND AN IDEA OF WHAT THE STUDENTS ALREADY CAN DO! What do you OBSERVE/HEAR? HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS ■ Jackie worked as a coach and then played baseball for the Negro Leagues after he was in the army. ■ Many great players played in the Negro Leagues. ■ Teams in the Negro Leagues had to follow Jim Crow laws. ■ World War II was a turning point for segregation. ■ President Harry S. Truman ended segregation in the U.S. military in 1948. ■ People wanted to desegregate civilian life, too. ■ Baseball was significant to American culture. It was considered America’s pastime. ■ Sportswriters wrote daily articles about segregation within professional sports. ■ Some baseball owners tried to commit to breaking the color barrier but weren’t successful. ■ Branch Rickey, the president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, decided to try. What QUESTIONS do you have? HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS ■ Why were some people against integrating baseball? ■ What was so special about Jackie Robinson? Explain what this text was about by summarizing the information heard. HERE IS A SAMPLE In “1945: A Changing World” in Promises to Keep, Sharon Robinson describes how people began to push for the integration of baseball. Major League Baseball did not allow non-white players, so black players had to play in the Negro Leagues. But, after World War II, people began to question why baseball was segregated. Sportswriters wrote daily articles about segregation within professional sports and asked the commissioner, owners, ballplayers, and fans to end segregation in baseball. A couple of baseball owners tried to break the color barrier in baseball but were unsuccessful. Branch Rickey, the president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, however, was successful. Rickey grew up playing baseball. He had strong values and beliefs and was well-known for making bold moves in baseball. When he first proposed integrated baseball, the commissioner at the time was against it. But that commissioner died, and the new commissioner supported integration. Rickey wanted to break the color barrier for two reasons: He believed in equality, and he wanted to build the strongest team possible. He used scouts, studied reports, and talked with sportswriters to find the right player to bring to the Major Leagues. He was looking for someone who could play at the Major League level, but who was also the right man off the field. That led him to Jackie Robinson.
